A Journey Into Cambodia’s Indigenous Heartlands

The Gallerist is proud to present HIGHLANDS, the latest solo exhibition by renowned Cambodian artist Chhim Sothy. In this powerful new collection, Sothy takes us into the highland regions of Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri, where Cambodia’s indigenous communities live closely with nature, spirit, and tradition. Through his paintings, Sothy offers viewers not just beautiful imagery, but a chance to understand a world that many people rarely get to see.

Most people know Sothy for his art inspired by Cambodia’s classical past, the grace of apsaras, the symbolism of Buddhism, and the beauty of ancient stories told through line and color. But in HIGHLANDS, he shifts his attention away from these familiar scenes and toward the everyday lives of indigenous families who live far from the busy streets of Phnom Penh. The shift feels refreshing, honest, and deeply meaningful.

In the northeast of Cambodia, daily life follows a rhythm of its own. People farm, gather food, hold ceremonies, and live in harmony with the forest that surrounds them. The word “Phnong,” sometimes used to describe the main ethnic group in Mondulkiri, can also mean “wild”,a word that carries misunderstanding. But in Sothy’s hands, this “wildness” becomes something beautiful. It reflects a life that is untouched by the speed of modern society, a life filled with spiritual belief, respect for nature, and strong community ties. His paintings help us see this world with new eyes.

What makes the exhibition especially moving is the way Sothy portrays ordinary moments with quiet dignity. Women pounding rice together become part of a graceful ritual. Hunters walking through the forest become symbols of resilience and connection to the land. Village ceremonies glow with warmth, showing how spirituality is woven into daily life. These scenes feel real, lived-in, and full of emotion painted by someone who understands their value.

Sothy’s style brings this world to life with elegance. His colors are rich but gentle, from the earthy tones of the forest to the warm reds and black that reflect spiritual energy. His brushwork feels thoughtful, giving each figure a sense of presence and personality. There is a softness in the way he paints, as if he is inviting viewers to slow down and appreciate the depth behind each moment.

Born in 1969 in Kandal Province and trained at the Royal University of Fine Arts, Chhim Sothy has spent decades shaping the direction of contemporary Cambodian art. He blends traditional Khmer themes with modern techniques in a way that feels respectful yet fresh. He also serves as an adviser to the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and teaches at RUFA, where he continues to guide young artists. His dedication to both tradition and innovation has made him one of Cambodia’s most influential cultural voices.

With HIGHLANDS, Sothy reminds us that Cambodia’s identity is much broader and more diverse than many people realize. His paintings honor the beauty of indigenous culture, the strength of community, and the quiet spirituality that runs through highland life. The exhibition feels like an invitation to step into a world shaped by nature, memory, and resilience of Cambodia.

“HIGHLANDS” opened from November 12th 2025, at The Gallerist, Phnom Penh. Visitors are warmly welcomed to experience this heartfelt and visually captivating journey into Cambodia’s highlands, a world where tradition is alive, and every moment carries a story.
